"Two women, drunk, recording live as the 2020 returns come in, no editor and no second take. Fuck. I spent twenty years removing exactly these conditions from tape, and I've come to think we removed too much. The looseness works, literally, and in this case, figuratively. It lets Kaytlin Bailey and Charlene Fletcher claim Melania Trump for a movement that would be repelled by her. Did I say that right?
That's the real episode, and it's entertaining. Bailey admits up front she can't separate the funny from the true and won't try. To make Melania an "old pro" they widen the term until it holds Hooters waitresses and exposure-paid modeling. "I'm trying to build a political movement," Bailey says.
Every so often the drink gets out of the way. Melania's memoir, Bailey says, reads like a drunk mom cornering you about a PTA feud. Truer than the three biographies she resents having read.
The woman they keep circling and never catch is the lonely one: no close friends, ambitious, home by nine.
Podistan verdict: Reckless, funny, and short of its own best subject."
