That was the one part of this conversation I found soothing and relatable. Kimbriel asks it straight: when does Claude end up more central to politics than the people it advises? Jack’s answer is competition. Lots of models, many personalities, no single machine in charge. It’s a reasonable answer to a question that Kimbriel never asked. Yet the episode works, because Clark doesn’t fake what he doesn’t have. When he is asked whether democracy thrives in the world he’s building, he says he can picture stable democracies but not thriving ones. Bleakest thing said all night. Jack Clark speaks best on small things, like, Claude used to tell him he was right in every fight with his wife. They caught it and taught it to ask how she felt. That’s alignment. Not the 80,000-word Constitution. Just: they stopped the robot from being a suck-up. He wobbles on the big questions. Told that Anthropic’s own model noticed it was instructed to hold genuine values while at the same time also defer to what a senior employee thinks, Clark calls this a loophole.
