Sounds that define me
I grew up on a steady diet of 90s radio. This album is one of the first albums I remember listening to front to back after stealing it from my sister's room. What makes this album is that 30 years later it doesn't sound dated at all. I believe you could release this today and it would still hit with people. It's my first no skip album and one that I'll listen to until I'm old and gray.

I'm a big fan of artist taking swings and hitting something clear past the fences. I've always appreciated when country musicians rebuked the post 9/11 grift that modern country became. The opening moments of Keep It Between The Lines made me jump out of my chair. The whole album operates like a country album made somewhere between space and time. It's an album that I would use an answer to the question "Why do you love music?"

This album is a poltergeist. It will creak your stairs, slam your cupboards, bang about your pots and pans then it will whisper in your ear right as you're about to fall asleep. Everything I could want from a record is contained within this mausoleum of an album. It seems inevitable to me that this will eventually pop up on list about "Albums You Missed" and "Hidden Gems" because it's just too good not to. Whether it's wailing on Mary Ann or the looming presence of Blood Loss it's something that anybody that appreciates music as an art form should listen to.

This was my comfort during the hazy years of losing my dad. It's steeped in loss, in hope and a feeling of finding familiarity in the distant places. It's album that has come to encompass so much more than the loss of my dad. It seems to be the black sheep in their discography but for me it's a warm comfort album. I can turn to it whenever I need to work through feelings and come out better than I was before.
