Sounds that define me
As I write this, I'm coming to terms with the fact that this beautiful band might already have split without my ever having seen them play live. This is such an exquisite piece of queer indie, with gorgeous guitars and brilliant dual vocals from two really different sounding voices that somehow meld into a unique kind of unison (the way that Difford and Tillbrook have done occasionally). Also includes the amazing line 'I'd kill for you if you gave me the time and the place. Twenty-five to life for that look on your face'.

The existentialist team-up I never knew I needed. The concern and consolation of our impermanence, captured in song by Charli and in the spoken coda of David Cronenberg. ‘Oblivion is freedom’ David tells us and there’s something elating about the sentiment and the calm authority with which he expresses it.

A poet and a musical maverick. There’s a strange, scruffy stylishness to FLW and His Orchestra. And I’m always comforted by the line ‘There’s a word for what you feel, someday that’s gonna help you, yes it will’. I look forward to finding out what that word is…

Italo Disco has been one of my long-standing cultural touchstones, even before I knew that was its name. I've probably got multiple keepers to add from the genre, but this is one of the greatest manifestations of the art form. The opening, where everything kicks in (apart from the vocals) and the track really starts to take off, still gives me tingles to this day. The banger of a chorus demands a singalong too. I hope I get to dance to this in a club before I hang up my dancing shoes (or pop my clogs).
