Submission Terms

Long Play publishes essays and other writing about sound, and is published by Cassette. By sending your work to longplay@cassette.to, you agree to these terms:

You own what you write, and sending it to us does not change that. You keep the copyright, and you are free to publish the same piece anywhere else, before or after we run it. We may accept writing that has already appeared elsewhere, including on your own blog, newsletter, or Substack. If you are sending us something you have published before, you confirm that you are still free to license it to us: that you have not signed away exclusive or all-encompassing rights to it, and that no earlier agreement prevents you granting the licence below. If you are not sure whether a past arrangement limits this, tell us before you submit.

When you submit a piece and we publish it, you grant Cassette a licence to do so. It is non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, and irrevocable. Plainly: you may publish the piece elsewhere too, and there is no fee attached to the licence. The licence applies anywhere and once your piece is live it does not expire and you cannot unilaterally withdraw it, though we may remove a piece at our own discretion (see below). The licence lets us edit, publish, display, store, archive, and continue to show your piece on Long Play and elsewhere on Cassette, and use short extracts to promote the piece and the publication. We may sublicense these rights to a provider acting for us, and transfer them to a successor if Cassette changes hands. These same terms follow the licence wherever it goes.

By submitting, you confirm that:

Because these confirmations are yours to make, you take responsibility for them. If a claim is brought against Cassette because something you confirmed here was not accurate (for example, the work was not yours to license, or it infringed someone's rights, or it was defamatory), you agree to cover the reasonable costs and losses that result. This does not apply to anything we introduced ourselves through editing.

We will credit you as the author whenever we publish your work. We may edit for length, clarity, house style, and accuracy. If an edit would change the substance or meaning of your piece, we will run it past you before publishing. Your right to be identified as the author, and to object to distortion of your work, stays with you as the law provides.

Long Play does not pay for submissions at this stage, and sending us a piece does not guarantee we will publish it.

If you spot an error in a published piece, please contact us and we will look at it. You can also ask us to take your piece down. The licence you grant is lasting, but we will consider any reasonable request. If we do remove a piece, copies already shared or archived may remain, and these terms still cover them.

Some of these terms continue to apply after a piece comes down or you stop dealing with us: the licence over anything already published, the confirmations you made above, and your responsibility for them.

We handle the personal information you send us, such as your name or pen name and email address, as described in our Privacy Policy at cassette.to/privacy.

We may update these terms. The version published here is the one that applies to a piece at the time you submit it.

These terms are governed by the law of Portugal, where Cassette is operated. If you are an EU consumer, you also keep the routes to resolution your own law gives you.
